November 2, 2010 - Only 145 Days Away

Today the challenge begins. The Primary is over and our candidates have been selected. It is now our job to elect our Slate of Democrats. How do we do this?

We can volunteer our time. Our candidates need folks to make telephone calls, deliver absentee ballots, canvas precincts. We can host a house party for our neighbors to 'meet and greet' our candidates. We can write a letter to the editor of our newspaper in support of our candidates. We can walk or ride in the upcoming parades supporting our slate of candidates. We can invite neighbors and friends to attend the many events we will be hosting (potlucks, Demstock, central committee meetings, headquarters) where they can meet our candidates. We can write a check (big or small) so our candidates can wage an effective media outreach.

We have 145 days to meet and defeat our opponents challenges. The way we will win these elections is to demonstrate to Iowans that we have the best candidates. We can only accomplish this task by working to ensure our candidates' messages are heard and understood. The clock ticking & we need your help.

Did You Hear The News?

In a couple of weeks, we will we opening our 2010 Campaign Office at Marion Square Plaza, 7 Avenue, Marion, Iowa. We are very pleased because this office has a lot going for it: a large space, a safe location for staff and volunteers, good parking (Plaza parking lot, spaces around the City Park and Library), and it has great visibility in a high traffic area.

You may have already received an email that volunteers will be meeting at the Williams farm on Saturday, May 8, at 9am, to move our stored furniture to the office. If you can help with the move, please plan on meeting us out at the farm. If this would help coax you, we'll have donuts & juice waiting at the office for the arrival of all you hard workers.

If you can't move furniture, you can still help by donating the the usual office supplies that every campaign requires: paper, pens, markers, staplers, folders, cleaning supplies, trash cans, etc. Some folks have already been generous by loaning us a refrigerator but there are several other large items which we could really use such as a laser printer - do you have one that we might borrow?

We hope that you will be excited about this office and that you will stop in on Saturday morning to check it out. Hope to see you then.

Have You Voted Yet?

Since the weather feels as if it is already summer, some of you may already be making plans to take off for your summer vacation. You probably have checked off a number of to do's. So you probably have thought about stopping the newspaper, stopping the mail, scheduling the lawn care or the petsitter. Have you forgotten anything? How about this.

Have you voted an absentee ballot for your candidate in the Primary for US Senate or for Linn County Supervisor? If not, maybe you should travel into Westdale & cast your ballot there. However, if you are going to be in town next Tuesday, June 8, PLEASE DO NOT FORGET TO VOTE. Your vote does make a difference. So put it on your list of to do's, for Tuesday, June 8 - Go Vote!

Despite a final outburst by Old Man Winter in the form of a three-inch snowfall, an energized and committed group of Linn County Democrats met at Washington High School on Saturday, March 20, for the 2010 convention and to further prepare for the upcoming election cycle.

Special thanks to LCDCC Chairwoman Diane Hoffmann and Second Vice-Chairman Norm Sterzenbach for serving as permanent co-chairs of the convention. Thanks also to former Cedar Rapids Mayor Kay Halloran for serving as temporary chairwoman prior to the election.

Like all events and activities planned by the LCDCC, the convention could not have been held without a host of volunteers. Mike Robinson served as chairman of the platform committee. Bret Nilles led the rules committee. D.J. Arnold once again served as chairman of the credentials committee, and Kay Fisk was chairwoman of the arrangements committee. All who attended this well-run convention owe a debt of thanks to you and your committees for outstanding service!

Loebsack discusses the 3/50 Project with local business owner Heather Younker, at her coffee shop, Brewed Awakenings.

"Across the country, people are struggling to make ends meet, and as many families are cutting back, our small businesses are feeling the crunch," said Loebsack. "In Cedar Rapids, our economy has been hit twice, first by the floods and then by the current downturn. The 3/50 Project is the perfect example of Iowa businesses working towards economic recovery and stability."
